Building History
The building of Bohem Art Hotel
was built in 1905 as a stationery factory. Originally it was the home to the former Szénásy Körzőgyár, where notebooks, sketchpads and drawing compasses were made. Between 1905 and 1950, the majority of Hungarian students learned to write, read, count and measure with the teaching materials that were produced by this factory.
Our building keeps old traditions alive, both outside and inside. While our breakfast room on the -1 floor served as a storage space for supplies, our Suites on the first floor served as the factory’s main work area, and there was the former owner, Béla Szénásy’s apartment, as well. Szénásy also dealt with economic interest and marketing. It was his initiative that led to the creation of the Budapest Merchandise Fair, as the predecessor of the later Budapest International Fair. After Szénásy’s death in 1935, the stationery factory and the paper company continued to operate under the leadership of his son, until the nationalisation in the 1950s.
